Acute diffuse otitis externa (swimmer's ear) is the most commonly encountered type of otitis externa. Exposure to moisture and local trauma are the most frequent predisposing factors. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the bacterium primarily responsible for this disorder. Secondary infective organisms may be cultured as well. The skin of the external canal is diffusely swollen, extremely tender and has a shiny appearance. The absence of cerumen is characteristic. |
