Bullous myringitis is an acute inflammatory disorder of the tympanic membrane and surrounding deep canal skin, which is characterized by severe otalgia and the presence of serum or blood filled bullae. Bullous myringitis is currently believed to be caused by an influenza type virus, although in some cases Mycoplasma pneumoniae has been cultured. The bullous lesions of the tympanic membrane may be a nonspecific reaction to infection. A larger blister, or bulla, is seen arising from the posterior portion of the tympanic membrane and surrounding canal wall skin. The bulla is filled with a clear serous fluid (although a small amount of blood is seen around the base of the bulla). Petechial subcutaneous hemorrhages around the base of the bulla are characteristic |
