If viable epidermis is implanted beneath the epithelium of the external ear canal, an epidermal inclusion cyst may develop. These cysts are usually the result of trauma or surgery. They may also be seen on the tympanic membrane following onlay grafting of an incompletely de-epithelialized fibrous drum remnant. Epidermal inclusion cysts are usually asymptomatic. In this regard, they differ from keratin implantation granulomas which are foreign body granulomas with an inflammatory reaction. At the seven o'clock position a small inclusion cyst appears as a round white pearl |
