The gallium Ga 67 citrate scan images the infective focus by means of radiogallium binding to granulocytes. The gallium scan is a highly sensitive indicator of the presence of inflammatory disease, and is equally useful in assessing the effectiveness of therapy. When an infective focus has been sterilized, the granulocytic binding of the radionuclide ceases and the gallium scan should return to normal. The matching left posterior oblique view of a gallium Ga 67 citrate scan shows the "hot" image of the focus of infection within the skull base. |
