Necrotizing Otitis Externa-Histopathology

Description : The histologic appearance is typical of that seen with infected granulation tissue and soft tissue infection. The distinctive feature of this condition does not lie in histology or bacteriology, but rather in its clinical behavior. This is a biopsy from the granulation tissue which was removed. The diagnosis of malignant otitis externa is made on a clinical basis alone since the histology reveals the usual features of an inflammatory aural polyp, i.e., newly formed capillaries, diffuse infiltration with chronic inflammatory cells, edema, and the presence of fibroblasts laying down collagen fibers.
