External Canal Polyp

External Canal Polyp

Description : Excessive granulation tissue produced following injury or chronic inflammation in the external auditory canal may become secondarily epithelialized to produce an external canal polyp. The features of an external canal polyp will vary with the amount and duration of the inflammatory process. The surface may be epithelialized or ulcerated, and histologically the amount of granulation tissue and fibrosis will depend upon the extent of the healing process within the polyp. Aural polyps within the external canal are usually associated with otorrhea and a conductive hearing loss. Bleeding may occur when a large inflamed polyp is abraded. This large polyp arising from the external canal completely filled the canal and protruded into the conchal bowl. The lateral surface of the polyp is noticeably ulcerated.
